Why We Use Essential Oils in Our Handmade Soap
Essential oils have been part of our soap recipes for years.
We don't use them because we want our soaps to smell overpowering. We use carefully chosen blends to give each soap its own natural scent and character.
From fresh citrus to earthy patchouli and softer florals, every blend is chosen to work alongside the simple plant oils and natural butters in the soap.
So, what do our different blends smell like?
Fyne Spice Drift – Patchouli, Orange & Pink Pepper
Warm, earthy patchouli sits alongside bright orange, with pink pepper adding a gentle spicy note.
It's a deeper, warmer blend with enough citrus to keep it fresh.
Alba Calm – Lavender & Himalayan Cedarwood
Lavender brings its familiar soft, floral scent, while Himalayan cedarwood adds a warmer, woody note underneath.
Together they create a gentle, grounded blend that isn't overly floral.
Westcoast Wildflower – Rose Geranium & Lemongrass
Floral rose geranium meets fresh, citrusy lemongrass.
The two balance each other well — one soft and botanical, the other bright and clean.
Glen Rosa – Rose Geranium & Lavender
Rose geranium and lavender create a softer floral blend.
The rose geranium has a fresh botanical character rather than a heavy rose scent, while lavender rounds it out with its familiar herbal note.
Highland Light – Lemongrass, May Chang & Frankincense
Lemongrass and may chang give this blend its bright citrus character, with frankincense bringing a warmer note underneath.
Fresh and lively, but with enough depth to keep the citrus from feeling too sharp.
Argyll Citrus Mist – Patchouli, Mandarin & Lime
Patchouli gives this blend its earthy base, while mandarin and lime bring a fresh citrus edge.
It's bright without being overly sweet, with the patchouli adding warmth and depth.
Why Essential Oils Rather Than Synthetic Fragrance?
We choose essential oils because they suit the kind of soap we make.
Our recipes are deliberately simple: plant oils, natural butters and carefully chosen essential oil blends. We don't need an overpowering fragrance or a long list of unnecessary additions.
The scent can also soften naturally as a bar ages. That's part of working with essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance oils.
Choosing a Scent That Suits You
Scent is personal.
Some people naturally reach for fresh citrus. Others prefer something earthy, floral or gently spiced.
That's why we create different blends rather than trying to make one scent suit everyone.
And because our soaps are made in small batches here in Tarbert, Argyll, the essential oil blend is just one part of the recipe. The oils, butters, cold process method and proper curing all matter too.
