The Benefits of Using Natural Ingredients in Skincare
Share
Simple ingredients. Chosen for a reason.
There are a lot of ingredients competing for space in our bathrooms.
We prefer to keep things simpler.
At Damn Fyne Soap, we use plant oils, natural butters and essential oils chosen for what they bring to a recipe. No unnecessarily complicated formulas. Just carefully considered ingredients and products made in small batches here in Tarbert, Argyll.
So, what do natural ingredients actually bring to skincare?
Simple Ingredients You Can Understand
One of the things we like most about working with plant oils and natural butters is knowing exactly why they're there.
Shea butter and cocoa butter bring richness. Coconut oil forms part of the base of our handmade soaps and body butters. Jojoba, grapeseed, thistle and avocado oils allow us to create lighter blends for our body oils.
Every ingredient has a job to do.
And you'll find the full ingredient list on every product page, so you can see exactly what you're putting on your skin.

Plant Oils and Butters for Skin Comfort
Natural oils and butters contain different combinations of fatty acids and other naturally occurring components.
But for us, the important bit is much simpler: how does the finished product feel on your skin?
Shea and cocoa butter give our whipped hand and body butters their rich, nourishing feel.
Lighter oils such as grapeseed, thistle and jojoba work particularly well in our body oils, where we want something that spreads easily and absorbs without feeling unnecessarily heavy.
It's about choosing the right ingredients for the product rather than adding ingredients simply because they're fashionable.
Essential Oils Instead of Synthetic Fragrance
We use carefully chosen essential oil blends to scent our products rather than synthetic fragrance oils.
Sometimes they're fresh and citrusy. Sometimes floral, herbal, earthy or gently spicy.
Argyll Citrus Mist combines patchouli, mandarin and lime. Westcoast Wildflower brings together rose geranium and lemongrass. Moor Petal pairs patchouli with rose geranium.
The scent matters, of course.
But so does keeping the recipe straightforward.
Natural Ingredients Still Need Thoughtful Formulation
“Natural” doesn't automatically mean that every ingredient suits every person.
Essential oils are natural, for example, but some people can be sensitive to them. That's one reason we're open about exactly what goes into our products.
If you know your skin reacts to particular ingredients, always check the full ingredient list before trying something new.
Simple skincare should still be informed skincare.
Less Clutter. More Purpose.
We don't believe skincare needs to involve ten different products or an overflowing bathroom shelf.
A properly made soap. A rich body butter when your skin wants something more substantial. A lighter body oil when that's what you prefer.
That's often enough.
Keeping formulations simple also means we can concentrate on the ingredients that actually belong there, rather than adding things simply to make a product sound more impressive.
Made Slowly in Small Batches
Natural ingredients are only part of the story.
How a product is made matters too.
We've been making soap since 2008, and our products are still made in small batches in Tarbert, Argyll.
Our cold-process soaps are given time to cure properly. Our body butters are whipped in the workshop. Products are filled, finished and packed by hand.
It's steady work rather than mass production.
And that's exactly how we like it.

A More Considered Approach to Skincare
Choosing natural skincare doesn't have to mean chasing complicated claims about miracle ingredients.
For us, it's much more grounded than that.
Plant oils. Natural butters. Carefully chosen essential oils. Straightforward formulations. And enough time to make things properly.
Simple ingredients. Steady craftsmanship. Honest skincare.
