Why We Use Shea Butter in Our Handmade Soap
Shea butter is one of the core ingredients in our handmade soap.
You'll find it alongside olive oil and coconut oil in our Signature soap recipe, and we've been using it in our soap making here in Argyll for years.
But like every ingredient we use, it has a reason for being there.
So, what does shea butter bring to a bar of handmade soap?
Shea Butter Adds Richness to the Recipe
Shea butter is a solid plant butter with a naturally rich, creamy texture.
In cold process soap, it becomes part of the overall balance of oils and butters that determines how the finished bar feels and performs.
We use it alongside coconut oil and olive oil rather than relying on any one ingredient to do everything.
Each has its own job.
It Helps Us Create the Kind of Soap We Want to Make
A good soap recipe is about balance.
Coconut oil contributes cleansing, hardness and lather. Olive oil helps create a milder bar. Shea butter adds richness to the finished soap.
It's the combination that matters.
That's why our recipes have been carefully developed rather than built around whichever skincare ingredient happens to be fashionable.
What Happens to Shea Butter During Soap Making?
There's an important distinction between shea butter used directly on the skin and shea butter used to make soap.
During the cold process method, the oils and butters react with sodium hydroxide in a process called saponification. This creates soap and naturally occurring glycerine.
So the shea butter isn't simply sitting unchanged inside the finished bar. It's part of the soap-making process itself.
Why We Don't Make Big Claims About Shea Butter
You'll often see long lists of supposed skincare benefits attached to individual ingredients.
We prefer to keep things a little more grounded.
A bar of soap is primarily there to cleanse your skin. What matters to us is creating a properly formulated bar that cleanses well without making your skin feel stripped.
Shea butter is one part of how we build that recipe.

Shea Butter Beyond Our Signature Soaps
Shea butter isn't only useful in soap.
We also use it in our whipped hand and body butters, where it has a very different role because it remains as shea butter rather than going through saponification.
That's one of the reasons understanding how an ingredient is used matters just as much as knowing its name.
The same ingredient can have a different purpose depending on the product and formulation.
